The Best Gift is the Present
Working on being the best version of me involves always checking in with my mini me. Call her what you want, my inner child, my younger self, my subconscious, in Huna we call her my Ku. She is the version of me that has stored all the pain, that has stored all the memories and that has stored all the stories and belief systems. Checking in with her means to be the parent to her that she needed all those years ago when those beliefs were formed. Spending time daily with her is telling her, you matter, I am here for you, I am ready to be the loving parent you need and to give you all the love and attention that seek.
Caring for yourself is like caring for a newborn or a puppy. As life has blessed us, our family got a puppy. Well he’s my mom’s puppy, but since they live next door and are totally part of our bubble he’s like ours. The beauty of this adorably puppy is that he reminds me to slow down and be in the moment. Puppies don’t know any other way to live but in the moment. No past to cling to, no worries of the future, just right now. I need a snuggle? No problem, I am going to bark til I get it. I need to relieve myself? No shame, I am just going to do what I need to do. There is such a freedom in living in the present moment. All the power lives here. All the joy resides here.
I love this old Inuit proverb : “Yesterday is ashes; tomorrow is wood. Only today does the fire burn brightly.” The fire burns now, that yearning in your belly is right now. And the beauty of the flickering flame, the warmth and heat it provides, the light that illuminates the way, those can only be experienced right in this moment. Just like our own beauty and light, its majesty can only be experienced in this very moment.
Yesterday is ashes; tomorrow is wood. Only today does the fire burn brightly. – Inuit proverb
So sweet Valentine, I give you the gift of my light, of my fire and of my attention this Valentine’s day. My gift to you, to us, is my presence. My attention and focus on this magical fiery moment. Just now. Just this very minute.
