The Little Black Bag

With the exception of joy, we have been socialized to see emotions and run. We shove emotions down, we swallow them whole or drown them in food, alcohol, sex, gambling, shopping, or whatever keeps us from feeling them.
I love Huna for many reasons. It’s of course a powerful healing modality and as well rich with wisdom. The ancient teachings show a much different response to emotions. It was said that for every unexpressed and unresolved emotion your spirit created a little black bag with that emotion and placed it in your body until such a time that you were ready to release it. So, when emotion came up, it was celebrated. You were ready to release the contents of your little black bag. Imagine! Imagine celebrating the opportunity to release an emotion and its associated baggage. The emotion itself was not labeled as bad or good, simply as a lesson that was ready to be learned.
This way of being with emotion has stuck with me. I love the visual as well. It paints a picture to an otherwise difficult concept making it easy for kids and adults alike to grasp. It’s not to say that emotions won’t come up, believe me they do. It has provided me grace when they do and instead of wasting my time judging the emotions, I am quicker to get to the real work of releasing it. My little black bags are the perfect accessory.
